OLD EMANUEL GOLF SOCIETY SPRING MEETING:
At last the sun decided to shine and finally we could discard our waterproofs and play golf in our short shirt sleeved tops and shorts! Although your secretary takes all the credit, someone in the
Society must have done something good for us to avoid rain this year. Cuddington Golf Club was in magnificent condition with plenty of grass, especially off the fairway, where it was very lush and difficult to play out of (assuming you found your ball!).
17 members played and as always, the scores were competitive. Even the nearest the pin was settled with some precise laser technology measurements to award the prize to David Coates by 6 inches (no metric stuff for us!). A magnificent effort down the 18th won Steve Walder the longest drive.
Your secretary arrived early and found a nice spot on the terrace (seated all by himself above), and when joined by everyone else it was tempting to stay there all afternoon and simply reminisce, but we realised this wasn’t the luncheon club, so we charged onto the course to do battle!
We play for two cups, the scratch prize and the handicap prize.

The Handicap prize was won again (3rd year running!) by Steve King who played 4 under his handicap, which he assured us is genuine, with three in a tie, 7 shots behind. After a count back (sorry about the jargon here) over the back nine and then over the back 6, Graham Smith crept into 2nd place. A bottle of wine as the prize seems to bring the best out of him! Although Steve assures us his handicap complies with the World Handicap System, we do wonder which part of the world he is registered with, and we may have to revert to the method used when the Society was formed, and simply cut him!! Having said that, well played Steve!
The Scratch prize, however, was a close-run thing. Once again, we had to count back over the last 9 holes and it was between Steve King and Tony Batt. In the end Tony just pipped Steve by one, and gets his name on the trophy for the first time. Well played Tony!
Thanks to everyone who played, and a reminder that we have an Autumn Meeting where guests are welcome. We will be at Kingswood GC where Chris Honeywill was last year’s Captain and will be welcoming us this year. It is on 19th September and I hope to see as many there as possible.
Next year’s Spring Meeting is planned for 8th May, so please pop it in your diary.
