OECC Latest News

This is an update to the message below, received from Ian Payne in late June 2024

Old Emanuel Cricket Club is now in a situation where we have no competitive cricket for the foreseeable future, although the former players will still be playing under the OECC name for the time being while all the bureaucracy is completed.

Recently, we held a meeting of the Vice-Presidents of the Club (effectively an AGM) to make some decisions on how OECC is to go forward and what we want to achieve. This message is to bring as many people up to date as possible.

To reflect the lack of competitive cricket, the VPs agreed to amend the current Cricket Club constitution in the following ways:

• To limit membership of OECC to former pupils of Emanuel School and the option to co-opt others from outside of that target group that have the knowledge and skills needed to develop a new OECC
• The only membership levels in the new OECC will be non-playing membership and Vice-Presidents
• The membership subscription is set at £25 per annum irrespective of membership level to provide funds for administrative costs, running social events and providing a fighting fund for the development of OECC. Voluntary contributions over and above the annual subscription will of course be most welcome
• To limit the minimum number of Executive Officers required to serve on the Management Committee to 4, namely Chairman, Treasurer, Club Captain and Secretary. We will also seek to have a Social and Fundraising Secretary.
• To reduce the minimum number required to form a quorum at Management Committee meetings to 3
• To reduce the minimum number required to form a quorum at General Meetings to 6
• To allow members to vote by email in the event that they can not attend meetings.

All of those constitutional amendments are temporary and will be reviewed and voted on at each subsequent AGM.

We further agreed the following:

• As OECC, we would adopt the OEA’s approach of using the four Cs – Companionship, Charity, Connection and Camaraderie – going forward
• We would try to offer some social cricket initially as a wandering side
• We would form a small social committee to plan events at least every six months for members to meet up and to plan a flagship event to celebrate our Centenary in 2026.

In the planning ahead, we will look to:

• Explore the possibility, however remote, of rebuilding OECC at a new home
• Explore the possibility of funding cricketing equipment for the school
• Explore the possibility of supporting the school’s cricket activities through bursaries etc
• Explore the possibility of creating ‘Twinned’ cricket clubs around the UK and the World through those with Emanuel School connections
• Explore the possibility of providing some form of cricket more suitable to the fitness and abilities of our aging group!

All of which requires boosting our finances, so we hope that all of you reading this will consider joining OECC as members and enjoying the social events that we aim to provide.

This is an update, received early May 2024, to the note below.

With no prospect of competitive cricket for OECC in 2024, and very few former Emanuel pupils as members of the club in recent years, the lead into the season about to start has been extremely quiet. We hope to change that and, as such, repeat our request in our previous message for OEA members, particularly those that have represented OECC on the field of play to get in touch with me ian@thejoolspaynepartnership.com in order to join our mailing list.

I am more than happy to field your views on how we can move forward as a club with particular emphasis on social events in 2024 and hopefully some social cricket too. Please get in touch, It will be great to hear from you.

The message received in December 2023: Following the voluntary separation of the current playing group from the OECC heritage, an interim committee of myself, Richard Coleman and Kavin Hemraj (the remaining OE members of the committee elected last April) are working on preparing for our next AGM hopefully in February when we will form a new committee that will take OECC forward on a new path. Unfortunately, that will not include competitive cricket for the time being as we will focus on making the club financially stable and providing some social cricket for current and former pupils of the school both male and female. We are also hoping to create an OECC Cricket Academy working in collaboration with the school to generate a new flow of ex-Emanuel pupils into a rejuvenated club that will take us into our centenary year in 2026 and beyond. Meanwhile, our former playing group have formed a new club under a new constitution which will continue to compete in the Surrey Championship. We wish them well. We would love to hear from OEA members for their ideas on our future development.

OE Target Shooting

The Association has a modest Target Shooting section !

We meet at Bisley in July to compete in the “Schools Veterans” – one of the many matches comprising the National Rifle Association’s Imperial Meeting. It’s open to a team of five former pupils from any school in the world and was called the “Public Schools Veterans” match when it was initiated in 1874. Old Emanuel first sent a team in the 1960’s. It’s fired at 500 yards using 7.62mm Target Rifles on the last day of the Schools Meeting.

The School ceased competitive shooting long before the CCF closed so there have been very few new members to the section since the 1980’s. We enjoy “limited success” against Veterans teams from schools which continue to support competitive Target Shooting (some opposing teams are composed entirely of Great Britain shots - we only have two)!

We welcome new participants – with or without Target Shooting experience, old or young, male or female. Training and practice can be arranged at Bisley in collaboration with the Wandsworth Full-Bore Rifle Club with whom we have been associated for more than 60 years.
